What is Herpes?
Herpes Simplex is a virus is transmitted through human-to-human contact. Herpes is the scientific name for eight related viruses that affect humans; herpes simplex refers to the virus strains that can cause “fever blisters” and other recurrent skin sores.
Common Herpes Simplex (HSV) strains include Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 Herpes Simplex generally causes cold sores. These sores commonly affect the mouth, nose, lips, chin and cheeks, can pop up shortly after exposure and later recur.
The Type 2 virus generally causes genital sores and affects roughly 5 to 20 million people (or 20% of all sexually active adults in the US). Most sexual active adults are exposed to the virus through sexual contact with an infected person.
Both Type 1 and Type 2 can be spread by touching an unaffected part of the body after touching a herpes lesion.
HSV often presents as painful blisters or as multiple blisters on affected areas of the genitals, mouth or rectum. These blisters break open and leave tender, crusted, painful sores.
There is no cure for HSV Type 1 and Type 2; thankfully, treatments are available to reduce symptoms and accompanying pain. Famvir, Valtrex and Zovirax are drugs used to treat and prevent outbreaks of herpes.
